Rock Spot Climbing Gym is a small chain of climbing gyms, with a location in Jamaica Plain, Boston Massachusetts. It is a smaller gym, that focused on small group programs and personal lessons.
I ran both lessons in belaying, basic climb technique lessons, and ran party belays for when a group came for either a group lesson or a birthday party.
Kettle Ho, Restaurant & Bar
April 2011 - August 2011
A family bar and restaurant, located in Cotuit – one of the townships of Barnstable.
Started as a dish washer, working as a prep-cook by the end of summer. Made pizzas, appetizers, and prepped ingredients for the meal rushes. All-in-all, a very straight forward job, but with some of the best people I’ve ever worked with.
T.L. Storer Scout Reservation
Barnstead, New Hampshire
Assistant Program Director, Trailblazer Area
April 2009 - August 2009
T.L. Storer Scout Reservation is a Boy Scout camp in New Hampshire. It is owned and operated by the Spirit of Adventure council of Boston, Massachusetts (formerly the Boston Minute Man Council). Camp attendance in the summer time averaged around 400 scouts a week, with lows and highs around 200 and 800, respectively.
As the Assistant Program Director of the Trailblazer area, it was my job to make sure that the youth new to the Boy Scouts of America program know the basic skills the BSA teaches. From fire starting, orienteering, wood splitting, basic first aid, camp site setup, cooking, it was my job to teach every scout in my program how to do all of these things in a safe manner. With all that the program taught, it was not uncommon for a scout to advance a whole rank over the course of a week. The Trailblazer program took green scouts and turned them into productive members of their troop.
It was a lot of long nights, hard work, patience with teaching the younger scouts, and one of the best summers of my life.
The Environmental Protection Agency is charged with ensuring compliance of with the environmental standards and safeties, from both corporations and individuals. They accomplish this both with surveys of the environment, and experimentation to validate claims.
I was hired for my experience with educating local anglers about the dangers their lead fishing weights posed to local bird populations, including several endangered and at risk species. I started out consulting on their own lead reduction policies in sporting equipment, as well as helping them to strategize ways of minimizing push back from outdoors men who were affected by the policy changes. As they put the finishing touches on their lead reduction programs, they began assigning me to do surveys of New England marinas, to make sure that there were enough pump out stations for each one, based on the number of boats moored and docked there.
Blue Hill Ski Area
November 2007 - March 2009
Blue Hill Ski Area is a very small ski area, with only a handful of trails, just south of Boston. Blue Hills is a full-service ski slope though, with lessons and rentals.
Hired partly for my experience with tuning ski and snowboard equipment, I ran their small tuning shop, as well as worked behind the counter as a rental tech. Would tune both customer equipment, as well as maintain Blue Hill’s rental equipment. When I worked behind the counter, it was often for the closing shift. I was responsible for signing back in all the rented gear, collecting any gear that was left on the mountain, making sure all the paper work was in order for when the hill opened the next day, and locking up for the night.
